It's a known fact that the best and cheapest way to attract traffic to your website is to write and publish your own original articles with a link back to your site, but what topic do you choose?

We are working on the assumption that you are starting out with a new website, so before you get down to the nitty gritty of topics, you need to decide on the niche of your site. This in itself can be a trial because the possible subjects are endless, so to make it a little easier, make a list of around ten subjects that are of real interest to you. Believe me, you will find it a whole lot easier to write articles on a subject which you already know about or which you want to research anyway.

Once you have your top level list, choose just one item which you think you will be able to write about with relative ease. The idea of a "niche" is a fairly narrow area of interest so if your top-level item is "cars", try to focus on one maker only or one type such as four wheel drives. Don't make your niche too narrow as you may find you have a very limited audience as well as running out of subject to write about but too wide and there will be far too much competition.

Ideally, the keywords or phrases you use in your article should attract in excess of 100 visitors a day on Google but result in less than 30,000 competing pages. How do you find out this information? Use a nifty free tool called Gtrends from Wordtracker. You just type in your proposed keywords and a list of related searches is produced with approximate number of daily searches, number of visitors and number of competing websites. You should note that the number of visitors is to the number one ranked site in Google for your keyword or phrase.

Another method of choosing your topic is to attempt to solve people's problems for them, but how do you know what these are? One way is to try to put yourself in the shoes of others - what would you want to know? Another is to identify forums or help pages and read up on what questions people are asking and what's being discussed. You can find forums pertaining to your niche by just entering the subject and "forum" into Google search and there you are - a list of forums. You could then write a list of tips or a checklist to complete a task on any of the subjects under discussion.

It can be a bit daunting choosing a topic, but you'd be amazed at how many directions you can approach this from. For example if you have a website on the subject of cats, the various topics could be cat breeds (there's at least one article per breed), cat training (wearing a collar, using a cat flap or litter tray, etc.), cat health (diseases, treatments, diet), cats living with dogs; you can even write about your own cat, it's funny habits and so on. The list really is endless so there's no excuse for not defining your niche and topics today and starting to write.
